About
a1ctl is a program able to control the fan speed of the Acer Aspire One netbooks, and do some useful other things. It was inspired by EEEctl, AsTray and some other programs available for the EEE PC series.

This program is a freeware, but I’ve spent countless hours making it, so if you like it consider making a donation to support my work.

FAQ
Q- What is the “Prevent HD clicking” option?
A- Some hard drives used in the A1 does some frequent clicking noise, due to [badly] aggressive power management that parks the HD heads whenever it’s possible, to reduce power usage and prevent potential damage from shocks. While this may be a good thing in a general case, when it occurs too frequently it dramatically reduce the lifespan of the drive and may be annoying due to the noise generated. This option almost disable the hard drive power management to prevent this clicks, thus preserving your ears and you drive’s lifespan at the cost of a little more power consumption. Activating this option is not recommended for the A1 models with SSD drives.

Q- Why the fan is stopped when I set it to slow mode?
A- Slow mode can’t be activated when the system temperature is under 37°c, thus the fan is stopped until this threshold is reached, whatever your temperature settings for slow mode are.

Q- Why do I need to patch my acpiec.sys driver?
A- You don’t need to patch this file to make the program run correctly, however due to this chatty driver, some warnings are constantly written into a log file (due to the temperature polling) causing your hard drive to never spin down and consume power. If you own a SSD drive model, this may reduce its life span due to constant writing causing wear. That’s why it’s recommanded (and completely safe) to patch your acpiec.sys driver when asked. This operation can be completely reversed using the ‘unpatch’ button in the configuration dialog.

Thank you, your program is very, very useful.

Perhaps you should consider writing in to liliputing or AspireOneUser, it’s not the publicity, it’s the help you would offer to many users like me.

Had to do some Google magic to finally find your program 🙂

Tiny typos : Megahertz abbreviation is MHz and not Mhz (notice the uppercased H). Thanks in advance on behalf of Mr Hertz !

Best feature yet (after 2 minutes): Changing screen resolutions.
    Suggestion:

    F1 = 1024*600
    F2 = 1024*768 ws. Virtual
    F3 = 1024*768 ws. Scaling

Laurent> Oops, it will be corrected in next version 😉

BB> so adding a shortcup to the startup entry of the startup menu doesn’t work on Vista? :/ I don’t have Vista so it will be tough to correct this one, but you can always create the shortcut yourself.

Steve> You need to install the “Microsoft Common Control Runtime”, available on the Microsoft website.

Mario> for the patch, check the FAQ 😉 I’ll think about those shorcuts for the resolution change, thanks for your suggestion.

    Hi,
i’ve been using your program for 2-3 weeks now and I’ve noticed that your program makes explorer.exe freeze from time to time. I can’t access the taskbar and I’d end up restarting/force quitting the program. On another note, sometimes my whole windows will freeze due to constant non-stop disk activity. I suspected this to be from enabling the “prevent HD clicks” option, so I turned it off. Afterwards, the same issue doesn’t occur as often anymore.

    I’m using XP pro SP3.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Was running this program on XP SP3, ran GREAT, then I got Vista, and the AAO handles Vista wonderful, but it didnt like this program. Scotts link above fixed that. [http://www.mp3-ripper.net/faq.htm#8] In Vista, it seems like the fan is louder than ever. The problem with it is that it just runs TOO fast, not that its like super loud. With Vista using my CPU more at idle, the temp gets just high enough [~50*C] to tell the BIOS to kick the fan up a bit, which is really unnecasary. With this program now running in Vista, I have it set anywhere from 59C and lower to be on slow fan, and you cant even tell its on. But the good thing is, is that air is still blowing out fine, and thats perfect. This program is perfect, Im voting the #1 program for the Aspire One, without a doubt. Thanks Noda!

Noda just wanted to point out that in Vista, when you reboot, the User Control thing pops up and asks if you want to allow acces to devcon I believe, and when you hit allow, it just repeats it over and over. When I edit your a1ctl options in the startup folder, and try to startup a1ctl with admin rights, windows defender blocks it EVERY TIME, and as far as I can figure out you cant get it enabled. I will keep trying to figure it out though. The ONLY thing you can do, is click on the start menu button, and in the search bar type msconfig . Click continue to proceed. Now when the window pops up click on tools, then click on Disable User Account Control and click Launch. Restart your computer, and you wont get a prompt to allow a1ctl to run, and it will startup just fine in Vista. However, Vista will prolly never prompt you again for anything, but to me that is a great thing, its wayyy more like XP. And I mean if I am an administrator, why would I have to click continue for everything I open prompting me to press a button to prove im an administrator? So not only will A1ctl startup fine, but your getting rid of all those god aweful annoying prompts to continue.

    @NODA:
Yes, I’m more than positive it’s related to this program. If it’s not directly the cause, then it’s at least having conflicts with something on my, and Darpa’s system. I have anti-virus and spyware running in the background always and have scheduled full system scans so I’m sure my system is running clean. There has yet been any crashes or unnatural behavior on my system. Only a1ctl causes abnormal activity.

Although when I reinstalled XP after some troubles with my WLAN in Vista the program does not seem to work. It starts up and everything, but I can”t se the temp, and I can’t change the fanspeed. Everything else in the program works though. If I have it in autostart the temp shows 56C, but it stays there whatever I do, in 56C I mean. And I can still not change the fanspeed, so whan I restart the program I’m back to the beginning of the post. Any idea on a fix for this?

Because the windows still uses orginal acpiec.sys, patched driver is useless. You can see from eventviewer log.
I manually patched acpiec.sys and save it by a temporary name. Then use safe mode – command promt and rename the temp file to acpiec.sys. It works for me.

Brilliant program, it’s made my AA1 lovely and quiet during lectures, so people don’t keep turning around to hear a VVVVRRRR… One of my friends just bought an AA1 too, and the first thing I did was tell him to install A1ctl.

The Custom fans speed settings work perfectly and that’s kept the noise down, however when I try to use the Device menu to disable the LAN or webcam, it pops up with a Up with a “Runtime Error 53: File not found”

    Any solutions?

I finally got the program to run and it’s great. Two questions though:

    1. What does “dynamic” CPU throttling mean? I’d like my netbook to run faster when on battery power (presently it runs MUCH slower when on battery). Would selecting dynamic instead of 800 MHz accomplish this?

    2. Since installing this I now get an error message with Norton Internet Security 2009. The message is “Symantec Service Framework has encountered a problem and needs to close.” Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions?

Great program! im using ít on my Aspire one 150Bb with 1.5gb ram, bios 3108, Xp home Sp3. And it works well, my only problem is that “prevent HD clicks” didnt work so I downloaded http://sites.google.com/site/quiethdd/ and with that program did my clicking hard drive finally became quiet. I also want to ask about the cpu throttling, when I choose “dynamic” will the processor stay in full speed or not? Best regards Patrick

This program doe now work as intended on my machine. It does slow the fan down right at the start, then after a couple of seconds it spins the fan up to max (or what sounds like max speed) even though the program is reporting 43 degrees.
The program is runnng at default settings and the fan should be off below 50 degrees.

I had “MSCOMCTL.OCX” problem. And here is mine solution. I have installed “Microsoft Common Control Runtime” first but it didn’t help at all. So I get MSCOMCTL.OCX here http://www.ocxdump.com/download-ocx-files_new.php/ocxfiles/M/MSCOMCTL.OCX/6.01.9782/download.html and copy it to the a1ctl directory and c:/windows/system32 directory. The program is very nice; however, with it installed, now the acer does not think it is a battery and is on constant AC power. I’d still like to have the battery icon for a general feel of % remaining. Is the battery number in the icon minutes remaining or %? Is there a way to convince Windows that I still have a battery?

For anyone else having trouble getting A1ctl to run on Windows 7 beta, here’s what I did.

Download the version of mscomctl.ocx above, not sure if other versions would work or not but this one does.

Register the ocx with “regsvc32 c:\windows\systems32\mscomctl.ocx” but it’s very important that the command prompt window that you run this in is opened with “Run as administrator” otherwise it fails.

At this point I got an error that a1ctl could not access to IO ports to a right clicked on the a1ctl executable and ran that as administrator too.

The result is a silient (most of the time) AA1.

same problem as the user ca6

When I start A1Ctl, or when i just click “Save” in the config window, the fan turns off (as wanted). But after 4 seconds the fan seems to go to max speed and, little by little, gets back to a normal speed.
During the whole process the temperature is shown to be 42-43°. A1Ctl is set up to turn of the fan if temp is lower than 60°.

My bios is v3309, Windows XP Pro sp3 (with autoupdates enabled), ACPIEC patched.

LIke some others, I bought the AA1 for my child, so she could get online, particularly for games like at Webkinz; however, the default screen resolution interfered with her ability to play. A1CTL seems to have fixed that problem, but I, too, am having the “On AC power” error in the Tray. I did a Google search for manually patching the ACPIEC, but didn’t see anything that seemed to address this particular problem.

    Hello Noda,

maybee you’re intereseted in getting rid of the direct I/O access to the embedded controller. Then patching acpiec.sys is no loger neccessary, because you can use this driver for talking to the embedded controller. Contact me or have a look at http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=11366. I’d be glad to help making this greate tool even better.

I’m trying to change the icons colors but with the .ini file but I don’t know what are the codes. The problem is when I use visual basic color coding I get other colors instead of what I want… Does anyone know what is the color coding I need to use?

@Mike> This is probably because you have another program running locking IO access, like GMABooster. I’ll try to resolve this problem in the next version.

@Bonhomme> The colors are HTML color coding, with a &h (if I remember well) prefix before. It’s standard RRGGBB then.

@John> You need to install the VB6 Runtime (search on MS website) to run this program.

    Hi,
since bios 3309 the values are changed which control the fan. I am currently working on an updated version for the latest bios and some other features (added resolution 1280×1024 to choose and you can add a custom device which you can turn of via the menue, for example a bluetooth module or what ever you want…)
This will work with the newest bios version from packard bell and gateway (clones from the aao…)
I think it will be ready in the next days.

I read that it will be usefull (to preserve battery’s life) to not charge it completely every time. Somebody suggest to limit the charge to about 80%.
For this reason could be usefull to add to a next release of the program a charging control that beeps you when the aa1 charging level reachs the valuel that the user has decided before.
    Sorry for my bad english

Custom speed means, you can say actl at which temperature the fan should start and when it should stop. This can be set in the “configure actl”. BTW the slow mode doesn’t exist, so it could be removed (i am not sure if it exists in older bios versions, but in the bios versions >=3301 it s not available).
About the battery charging, i could implement it, but i don’t think that it saves battery life. For example, i have got a Dell D610 (company laptop) and it is about 3,5 yeras old and the battery goes about 1,5-2 hours (3,5 when new). And it is used most time on AC. So i don’t think that charging only up to 80% increases battery life. But if you like, i can add it. I will have a look on it.

marco> This is a bad and wrong idea.

Sunny> slow mode exists and is available on bios version > 3301, but there is some hardware version that need another “magic” value to activate it. Also, slow can’t be activated until the CPU has gone over the 37°C threshold.

    @Olaf
I think the problem is, that actl gets the bios version by reading the registry. And the value in the registry is written to registry during installing xp. If you upgrade/downgrade the bios, the new value isn’t written/updated to the registry.
If you know how to use regedit, the start it and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System \SystemBiosVersion
and look which value is there. I think in your case 3309 will be there and not 3305….

    Reply
  • 139. Sunny  |  March 22, 2009 at 8:33 pm

I had a look on it and I downgraded my bios to 3305. But the version is updated in the registry after first start. So that is not the problem.
    @Noda
But i had maybe found a bug in your bios recognation part:
You use this here “If ((Right(res, 6) = “3114”)” to identify the version, you compare the last 6 (!) signs from the right from the bios string with 4 signs… that will never happen. I think it should look like this “If ((Right(res, 4) = “3114”)”. If I am right your tool will work on all versions exept 3109, 3114 and the newest 3309… It will always use the settings for the bis 3304 which works on 3301-3308.

For all those having problems with MSCOMCTL.OCX errors…
Download the runtime and then unpack the runtime package with WinRAR or 7-zip. Place MSCOMCTL.OCX in the root folder of A1CTL (next to the a1ctl.exe). That will solve the problem.
I don’t think there will be any need to install the runtime, though it can’t hurt either.

I’m writting this because i was still getting MSCOMCTL.OCX errors even though i’ve installed the runtime.

Isis> fan will be loud on every budget netbook, Asus or Samsung included (I own an Asus too). That’s why some tools exists to reduce this noise 😉

Concerning the HD click, this is a “normal” behavior of notebook HD, parking the heads to prevent data loss in case of a shock. But it concerns HD as Hard Drives, not SSD as you say you have… SSD have no mechanical parts so it can’t click.

I have the same problem as Jorgen, also on the 10 inch model (AOD150). I unpatched and uninstalled a1ctrl, but now my battery indicator drops to zero percent throwing me into hibernation. This happens over and over again when I’m running off of the battery. If anyone can help, I’d appreciate it. Right now, I’m at my wits end to get it working.

    TIA

Curious about the option to throttle the CPU. My Acer AspideOne is a 1.6 Mhz processor, but your menu offers 800Mhz and Automatic. I’d like an option to leave the processor alone.

Thank you for this program. I was heartbroken when my acer 10″ seemed to be locked into such a strange resolution as 1024X600 that made it impossible to use the Acer for most applications I need; i.e., Quickbooks9, Photoshop8, Adobe RaW, and Remote Desktop to a system using 1024X768 Resolution. Acer owes you Cash because without A1Crtl I would have returned my notebook.

    Hello

It seems that the program (version 0.4) does not work on my aspire one. My model is AOA110-1633 with bios 3308 and windows xp sp2 installed on a SSD 8GB.

After running the program and selecting different options the fan speed is not affected by any of them. The FAN OFF option does not turn it off and there is no speed change after modifying the slow or auto modes. I have clicked the patch acpiec button but there was no change.

I need the fan to be faster because my laptop is so hot, but no option makes it change its speed.

I’ve read some comments that say they can see the current temperature, but I don’t find that temperature; if I hover the mouse over the tray icon it doesn’t show anything.

    Thanks for any advice.

The program started working after UNPATCHING the acpi file. Now it does control the fan and it shows the current temperature and battery status.

The program says it is better to patch the acpi file but actually it is not.

I have an ssd, how will it be affected?

Thanks Again, will revert to 3305 in the mean time…

Great Program! But now it gives me problems. When I start the a1ctl.exe file it starts an instalation. When I reeboot the machine the instalation start over and after a while the progran runs. Every time i boot the instalation starts and it takes about 2-3 min. My bios is 3305 i flashed it down to use the program.
I unpacked all the files to a folder in my programs folder, and runs the exe file from there.

    Hello guys,
luckily noda released the sourcecode of his project 🙂 Many thanks.
So I could change some things, fix some little bugs and add support for new bios versions (now support till 3310 and for the one’s from Packard Bell and Gateway).
    Main changes in my version:
    – added support for new bios versions
    – added for screenmode 1280×1024
    – added XP-Style look for the programm
    – added possibility for adding one custom device which can be disabled via a1ctl menu, for example bluetooth device or something like that.

For adding your custom device you need the “device id” which you can find via “system”–>”device manager” in your windows. Open the device you want to add for controlling via a1ctl and go to the tab “details”. There you see the device id, for example “USB\VID_1BCF&PID_0535\5&1536627B&0&1”
You have to add “USB\VID_1BCF” into the field “Device Instance Id” in the configure window. And give it a name which you want to see in your a1ctl menu, for example “Bluetooth”.

And one comment for all with a bios version > 3308. It can happen, that on some A110 or A150 the fan control won’t work. I don’t know why, maybe it is due to changed hardware during production.
Here is the link to the new a1ctl:

^Thanks Sunny!!! It works !! Excellent!!

    Tested it with WINDOWS 7 RC1 – A110

BIOS 3305 – Fan Control works in custom mode
    – Video resolution switch is missing (probably win7 issues)

    BIOS 3103 Gateway(=3309) – Fan Control works!
    – Video resolution switch is missing

The Web Cam (acer crystal eye) is disabled when unticked, but does not turn on when ticked. You have to manually enable it in device manager.

ACPI patching/unpatching is also greyed in configure menu. (win 7 driver issues?) Still a few errors cropping up in logs.

The portion of most concern is the fan as its cheap and noisy…now after a1ctl its just cheap… haha

Thanks again Noda! And Sunny for tweaking and updating it for the masses!! Much Appreciated.

    Hi Sunny!

I downloaded your modified version and tried to install it in my A110 (8Gb SSD, 1Gb RAM, TinyXP (by Ron[nl]), Gateway BiOS 3103). However, I keep getting the following error messages everytime I try to install it:

“Error, can’t load settings: Type mismatch”

After I acknowledge this error dialogue, the program proceeds to ask me whether I want to patch ACPIEC.SYS. This next error message then immediately follows:

    “Runtime error ’53’:”
    “File not found: WinIo.dll”

After I acknowledge the above error dialogue, the installation then terminates prematurely.

FYI, I’ve been able to install Noda’s version without the above errors, although I haven’t gotten it to work with the more recent BiOS versions. Hope you can help.

    Thanks in advance! 🙂

    Hello,
on Vista and WIN 7 the possibility for tweaking some things like screenresolution and so is limited, because of security restrictions through windows…

For the problem with the runtime error “Error, can’t load settings: Type mismatch” I think it happens, because I added some infos to the “a1ctl.ini” I think you should first delete the old one and then make your settings again after starting the my new version.
The “Runtime error ‘53′:” “File not found: WinIo.dll” only happens if this dll isn’t in the same folder like the a1ctl.exe…

    Hi again, Sunny!

I finally figured out what I did wrong. I initially thought that the file you provided was a full installer package (which I tried to “install” from scratch), and only belatedly realized that it was just the executable meant to replace the original A1CTL executable.

It seems to be working now, and I’m currently keeping it under observation for any unpredictable behavior or unexpected crashes.

Anyway, thanks again for your modded version, and of course to Noda for the original program. 😉

    Hi Noda and Sunny

Sunny your update works for turning the fan off and putting it in Auto mode. Thanks a Lot!

It unfortunately does not work with the slow setting. What happens is that it speeds up to max and then slowly goes down to off state (takes about a 1min).

Think maybe the code for slow is incorrect in the update.

    Using Bios 3103 Gateway… Win7 rc1.

    Still great work!

    Thank you both! 🙂

As far as I know, Acer removed the slow mode in bios >3308. And I think you don’t need the slow mode really… Use the automatic instead and it is nearly as silence as in slow mode. In custom mode I only use “fan off” and “automatic”. Thats all you really need. But If somebody has some more infos to the slow mode please let me know. Then I can maybe provide a new update.

      hi Rogi –

thanks for the suggestion. tried that before
posting, but logoff -> switch user -> login =
“a1ctl – Error, can’t initialize IO access” which
makes me think a1ctl locks something, hence
the question about a daemon. of course they
could always logoff between users but then
      they can’t just do a quick pass-the-computer
for a moment and get it back with their session
intact, which is what is wanted…

p.s. what i have noticed is that once it is
running then as long as the user who has
it in her startup menu to invoke it stays
logged in, it continues to work ok for
whichever other users she might switch
to, so something that checked if an instance
was already running and aborted trying to
reload it would be a possible fix that could
be implemented externally in a login script,
except that then the icon wouldn’t show
in the switched-to user’s tray, so she
would not be able to change the settings
for resolution, etc, which why they want
it in the first place. unfortunately, in this
instance, any given one of the four using it
will not always be around to login for them
all. i’d look at the code if i didn’t mind buying
a compiler just for this, or put in the effort to
do a port to something i can compile, but
both of those options are pushing the
devoted partner of one user role that got
me involved in the first place a bit further
      than I’d like…

Excellent work Noda and Sunny. I own a D150 with 2GB of RAM and have also noticed that the slow mode doesn’t work (haven’t had the temp up high enough to activate auto mode I think) and the temp reads 17 (not sure if it just runs cool or if it is a static indication). Please do not take my observations as complaints I love the possibilities that this program opens up. I would like to see downscaling for resolutions up to 1920×1080 and an explanation of what the dynamic CPU mode does. I am trying to overclock my N270 at or about 2GHz. If anyone who has any experience with this kind of thing I would appreciate some links/tips/procedures (this site was hard enough to find). Anyway, I appreciate your work and dedication Noda and Sunny. I expect great things out of you two in the future.

The fan control of A1CTL doesn’t work on a D150 or another acer netbook, only on A110 or A150… The downscale and the other things should work on other acer netbooks.
BTW it is NOT possible to overclock the acer netbooks. Acer uses a special device for clocking the bus and cpu which can’t be changed via software…. very sad, but there is no chance…

quick note – it does work under Windows 7, the proper command to get the runtime working is

    regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\mscomctl.ocx

regsvc32 isn’t a command, and systems32 isn’t a folder. you may need to download the runtime separately. i ended up having to dl mine from majorgeeks since the ms exe didn’t install properly

AA1 didn’t stay on longer than 15 seconds.
Cause: selected Prevent HD clicks in Configure.
Solution: Unplug power cord, take out battery, plug everything back in.

    Tips for improvement:
    – Visable on taskbar when opened.
    – Check compatibility till latest BIOS (3309)
    – Add to devices things like SD-slots, soundcard, USB-ports

I’d like to report that the modified version now works for my aao110, but if I patch the acpiec driver I get an entry in error log about not been able to start. Also the system thinks it’s on AC all the time and I have no temprature display on a1ctl, so this patch is definitely not working for me and also breaks a1ctl.

      Hi,
normaly the a1ctl is only for the 110 and 150. But some things work on other acer’s, too. I can change the resolution to whatever you want to have. But I have only a 110 so I can’t test higher resolutions.
I think the D250 have got other numbers of their bios version. You can check check it if you go to bios during startup or you can find it somewhere in the windows system information.

It’s because I’m going to use my Aspire one to control a CNC machine and if the CPU is dynamic, I will have problems and I need the maximum CPU speed.

    Can I change it?

    Thanks

    Juan

if the bios version is 3310, then modify the acerfand file as:

    add on line 86
    BIOS_VERSION_3310=”v0.3310″

    and modify line 122 to

    “${BIOS_VERSION_3309}” | “${BIOS_VERSION_3310}”)

I’m seeing different views on whether A1CTL can control the fan on the D150/D250.

Some say it works, others say it don’t.

    Which is right?

    In relation to #212..

Could it be that A1CTL fan control only works with the D150/D250 models, that come with Atom 270 CPU and without Bluetooth like the A150?

Windows 2000 doesn’t have powercfg.exe so the program won’t load on this OS: says “File not found” and aborts. Any solution?

I think you have used the 0.4 Version and then you have updated to 1.0. But if you update you have to delete the a1ctl.ini. There are some changes in the new version.

Ok I took the plunge, tracked down the latest (I think 🙂 mscomctl.ocx, tucked in in the same directory as the program and let it rip. Awesome. My thanks to the creator, those who assisted, and the users whose previous posts were quite helpful for installation. I understand the program is no longer under active development, but I do have a quick question. I think it was written in Visual Basic 2005. If this is correct, would a port to VB 2008 provide any benefits (smaller, faster, etc)? I don’t have much experience with VB, so I can do little more than guess. Anyone with more experience care to weigh in (or perhaps do the port :-). Again, thanks to all that made this awesome utility possible.

Oh, it is only about one month ago when the last version (1.0) was released. But i think this will be the last version, because it was written for the AA1 and not for the new netbooks. Some things will work on the newer versions, but not everything.
And it is written in VB 6.0 which is much better then 2005 or 2008 because you only need some small files for running the program, not the full net-framework…

installed the tool on a HP 2140 and it is more or less working. Screen oversizing to 1025×768 is working but resize to its original not (1024×576) it does not offer the option an the only way to get back the original resolution is the adaptersetting in windows.
Hopefully there will be some update to work with the hp 2140

vadim> Your only solution is to find by yourself the correct values for your hardware in the options.

alfred> This error is due to the BIOS entry, as a1ctl was originally made for the A110/A15O AAO serie. I presume you have a later model, right? I’ll see if I find some time to fix this issue, but it will be difficult for me as I have sold my AAO.

When flashing to bios 3307 or 3310 I’m also getting a spontaneous shutdown when the temperature hits 50 degrees. However when I switch back to an older bios it works fine. How does the Embedded Controller Values work? Especially the Test button? Will you please explain it further for me? Thanks.

Okay, I’m on an AOA110, running Ron’s XP and settled on bios 3307. I figured out the Test button and I changed the default Embedded Controller Value for Fan Off from AF to CF and that seems to work wonders. This is based on a post further up that says to change the a1ctl.ini file value to 207 (CF is the hex equivalent)

However, now the answer I’m looking for is what is Auto mode? More specifically, what happens when it triggers?

    – the program doesn’t start automatically on startup (I set it in option but doesn’t work!)

But of late, when i shut down windows, can’t shut down and upon pressing Ctrl +Alt +Del to see the task manager it shows that a1ctl is not responding. and sometimes, my acer goes on hibernate when i’m in the middle of typing/surfing. When i log back in it says something abt make sure that you quickly connect to power to avoid losing your work. Later when i try to shut down i can’t and it shows the a1ctl as not responding. Hope some one can help me out. I like this program and its frustrating cause it has never caused me problems.

    Hey there everyone,
Thank you, Noda, for producing such an amazing utility for our AAOs! Question re: downscaling w/ 1024×768… Apparently I can set a1ctl so that XP boots in the downscaled 1024×768 mode, and it does seem to work… for a second, then some process automatically resets the screen to 1024×600. After that I have to manually reset to the higher res. I’ve tried a few things (loading a1ctl last, disabling the tray icon for Intel graphics, setting the intel setting to 1024×768), but nothing works. Have you or anyone heard of this issue? Any fixes? If I could sort this out my Aspire would achieve perfection. Thanks.

**SOLVED** (the above issue/post). The culprit was the QtZgAcer service (which does not *seem* to be particularly important – correct me if I’m wrong), which I unclicked in msconfig. Now my AOA150 boots up at the desired downscaled res of 1024×768 automatically and stays that way. No manual re-selecting required anymore.

    Hello guys,
please this program is ONLY for AAO 110 and 150 and NOT for D250 or anything else. It is only written for 110/150. So don’t ask why it is not working. It maybe would be possible to change it for D250 and others, but that would be a lot of work…
And this program isn’t working properly on VISTA and WIN7 because these systems limit the posibilities on some things (downscale is not possible for example). So use it on XP and 110/150 and you will have no problems.

      Hi Sunny,

      Thanks for the response.

I got directed to this site from a forum discussing a strange but common freeze/lockup issue with the Acer Aspire One 751h (has to be power reset to restore). Some people thought it may have been the fan turning on too late / cooling related issue.

Any hoos I’ve had some success with the earlier release of this app (V0.4). It appears to conserve battery life when I switch it to the 800Mhz setting

(Im not sure if its actually underclocking to this speed or not
As the is 1.33 GHz not the 1.6 / 1.66 GHz of the 110/150.

It also reads my current temp but Im not sure if its activating my fan or not (I think it is :p).

It also can enable/disable webcam/ethernet/wifi and change screen resolutions (though its not made aware of the 1366 x 768 available on the 751h).

The good news is I’m not experiencing random freezes any longer. Though I have also upgraded the RAM to a 2GHz stick which could have also resolved the issue.

Any way I hope this post helps any one with a AO751h.

      Lukeus

Do anybody now what´s the problem and how to fix it????

      MSCOMCTL.OCX PROBLEM FIX FOR XP

After installing both files listed at top of this page:

you need to manually extract the contents of the update patch with winrar (right click on patch and click extract files, then click OK) and copy the contents to the ‘system32’ folder of your windows install (e.g. ‘C:\WINDOWS\system32\’ ).
If it asks to replace files say no to all.

Hope it also works in other windows versions – if the system32 folder is protected you need a to find a way to get around that. You could try safe mode? Never used Win7 though…

      Anyways, goog luck!

I have found a solution for everyone who is having trouble with the resolution max being 1024 x 600:D

It works for windows 7 (i am using the ultimate edition) on the Acer One D250.

    What to do –

    1) Run regedit
    2) Search and modify all values “Display1_DownScalingSupported” from “0” to “1”
    3) Restart the system
    4) Enjoy with the two new resolutions 1024×768 i 1152×864

It worked for me… Make sure you change the value in all four registry entries.

    Enjoy:D

This totally worked on the Acer Aspire One I just bought from Walmart ($228…amazing!). It’s running Windows 7 Startup. Fantastic fix, thanks!!

There were only two registry entries to change, BTW, for me.

    Hi Salvatore,
I use Windows 7 Home Edition with Acer D150.
I have modified the value of the entry “Display1_DownScalingSupported” from “0” to “1” and I have observed that I can intall the programs with pre-requisite of video resolution at least 1024×768 (for example: the Panasonic HDWRITER), but I obtain a blue-screen if the program execute operation regarding the screen.
Using Regedit I found two entries and not four. Is due to the different version of Windows?

For all those with the unexpected shutdown problem, here is what helped me (AAO 110 with BIOS 3310):

    – go to “Configure” and there to Enable controller values
    – tick “Enable custom EC values”
    – set Fan stop to CF
    – set Fan slow to 4
    – set Fan auto to 0

    Thanks to PavelD and pc.

For those having problems with the Run-time error ‘13′: Type mismatch:

    – I had this problem too at first
    – It disappeared once I had all the latest drivers installed (I think it was the VGA driver that made the difference)

    Hope this helps someone.

    Hi,
    Great soft!
I’m running fixed ver. downloaded from http://maps.black-sheep-team.com/a1ctl/new/a1ctl.exe.
Runs fine, but even patched ACPIEC keeps on writing in Event Log every 3rd second
\Device\ACPIEC: The embedded controller (EC) hardware returned data when none was requested. This may indicate that the BIOS is incorectly trying to access the EC without syncronizing with the OS. The data is being ignored.
    Any suggestions?

OK, here is a workaround for those who may have the same problem.
      1. Check if C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\acpiec_nolog.sys is presented.
      2. Run regedit and in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ACPIEC, make sure ImagePath = system32\DRIVERS\acpiec_nolog.sys
      3. Reboot computer.
      Enjoy.

For anyone having trouble getting a1ctl to run on startup without it popping up the UAC admin box, first make sure you disable ‘run at startup’ in the config of a1ctl. Then follow the instructions here to get a1ctl to start at startup and logon using the Task Scheduler. Works a treat: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/67503-task-create-run-program-startup-log.html

I can’t disable the Touchpad although i’ve entered the full Device ID. And is it possible to add a “maxspeed” to the CPU clock settings? Even when i’m decompressing files the cpu speeds up, slows down, speeds up … all the time… i dont want it to do that 😛

    @the devs:
i have an ao532h and the fan is really annoying, i’m currently trying to change the source code so it works with the new model.

i have id’d the corresponding registers in the EC.
changing 0xb0 will change the fan speed 0xb1 can be used to read cpu temp.

however both registers are updated periodically with the temperature, that means when i write to 0xb0, the fan goes silent for like a sec then spins back up.

how could i have a1ctl periodically (like every 0,5sec) overwrite the register?
i find it quite hard to follow the whole program structure since i’m used to C.

My daughters netbook, Aspire ONE AO250, has issues with some games that require larger screen resolution. The games are too large to display so option, buttons etc are off screen.

I tried this little program and it appears to work fine. I can change resolution etc (can scroll around window) but as soon the game is activated it always appears to large, as if it has its own desktop and resolution.

I wonder is there any way around this. The games are Big Fish games.

    Hi,

Looks like a very useful utility indeed.

Took some doing, however, to get it up and running even after updating the VB runtime software. Kept getting a 13 mismatch error. Succeeded finally after replacing the main exe file with the one mentioned in message 307 above.

Now that it does what it needs to do, a few questions about some items in configuration:

    – Is “Customer user device” the extra USB stick/drive I am using with my Aspire Netbook? If yes, what does “enable” do?

    – What are the “Embedded controller values”? What do I need to do there? What does (default?) “AF” mean in “Fan stop”? And what does (default?) 10 value represent in “Fan slow”? Same question for the zero in “Fan auto” and “Bios”. Does tweaking all or some of these items change anything? Pushing the “Test” button does not seem to do anything I’m aware of…

All the rest is clear to me.

    Thanks again for the utility.

    Harry

    Hey guys,
here’s how to run a1ctl on Windows 8 (basically the same as Win7):

    1. Download und unzip a1ctl.

    2. Download MSCOMCTL.OCX from here: http://www.ocxdump.com/download-ocx-files_new.php/ocxfiles/M/MSCOMCTL.OCX/6.01.9782/download.html

    3. Copy it to c:/windows/system32

    4. Register MSCOMCTL.OCX
    – Press [Win]+X to open the Windows 8 Start Menu (yes, there actually IS one 😉 )
    – Click “Command Prompt (Admin)” – the “Admin” part is important, else it won’t work!
    – you should find yourself in “C:\Windows\system32”, if not, go there (cd\, cd windows\system32)
    – type “REGSVR32 MSCOMCTL.OCX” (w/o the quotes of course)

    5. Navigate to the folder you unpacked a1ctl to, right click a1ctl.exe and click “Run as adminimistrator”. Or even better, right click a1ctl.exe -> Properties -> Compatibility -> tick “Run this program as administrator”

    6. Confirm with “Yes”

    Done.

Sadly, the screen scaling option doesn’t work; I absolutely HATE the downscaling trick to run Win8, everything’s looking like crap. “Real” 1024×768 along with screen scrolling would be much more convenient. Oh well…. at least my AspireOne is finally silent again. 🙂

Wow! That was quite something! I forgot how much of a pain it can be to get this fantastic utility to run! It’s the new Windows 7 install that’s been a nightmare though – I’ve had each of the main issues listed on here to get through, and not in a single case did the simple solution work! The easiest way is to follow The OtherAlex’s Win 8 walk though, but to modify it where needed for Win7.

It’s installed but when I go onto the “customize notification” area, I see 2 other references to a1ctl and when I go to action them I get “this notification icon is not active” yet the program is running – strange!

I can’t get it to autostart. It’s there in the “config” to autostart. I’ve tried going into users startup file and adding it there. Nothing. I’ve even tried to put an exception in Avast’s sandbox even though it’s not set to sandbox anything…..any suggestions?

Oh, and the resolution always drops back to 748.
