iPod Media Encoder converts video into an iPod-compatible format, the easy way. As I was bored with the already existing converters like Videora, Xvid4PSP etc, I made this simple & efficient video converter. The profiles should be easy enough to figure, keeping in mind that slower encoding also means better video quality.
The new video files are created by default in the same folder as iPodME.
Features:
– small (4 Mb), no setup, only 1 exe to put where you want, no codecs needed
– based on ffmpeg
– really easy to use and straighforward
– easy batch encoding, just select multiple files by clicking on the “add files” button or drag’n drop them into the list
– you can add new files to the batch during encoding
– run in background without disturbing your work (with the defaut priority option)
– 6 profiles adapted to most usage : 3 encoding speed, each optimized for file size or video quality
– possibility to customize the encoding options
– support soft-subtitles, and multiple subtitles per video
– support multiple CPU cores automatically
– can shutdown your computer after encoding

absolutely fantastic.. converting dexter ep1x01 from a HD 700mb rip to mp4-utilises 3 cores off my intel quad. took about 9mins to re-encode and finished with a 174mb file.
only probs i can see is video and audio can go out of sync if u skip through the video many times..

Hi, I want to feature an article about this in French; unfortunately I can’t use the software as parts of the GUI are not visible (such as the “Encode” button) and it’s not resizable!?
I use Win XP on a Dell Laptop, with a Vista mod style, maybe that doesn’t help, but as is, I can’t use your software..
Any suggestions?

What does “slow, size” “Slow quality”, “Fast size”….. and so on mean?
If I choose Custom and then “Best quality” and “x264” iTunes says that my Ipod Touch won’t play the file.
Which profile should I use?

Hi
Program works, but everytime I start to convert, I get the message “An error occured while detecting video format. The output video may be unreadable”.
I tried iPodME on three different computers (vista, xp, xp); all showed the same problem.
What am I doing wrong and how can I solve this problem?
It drives me nuts to always press “OK” before another file starts to convert. It should proceed automatically without this error message, right?

Great program, but one request.
It would be nice to be able to choose the save location.
Just ran it for the first time and had to hunt hi and low to see where it had saved it.
It put it into this directory:
c:\users\*username*\appdata\local\temp\rar$ex00\
Strange location.

Just changed it location and tried again, yes it saved it in the right place this time.
Another problem thou.
The saved file after conversion when double clicked under vista says :
‘Error -2048: couldnt open file becasue its not a file that quicktime understands.’
Now the file has an icon showing its an MPg4, itunes doesnt recognise it and using gspot the only information it shows is the container :
‘isom:MP4 Base Media v1[iso 14496-12:2003]
-mp41: MP4 v1 [ISO 14496-1:ch13]
any ideas whats going on?

That’s strange. You can try installing vobsub filter as explained in the help (problem with subtitles)

This is a pretty fuckin sweet program, Im getting 240FPS off a quad 6700 which is MUCH better than the 40-50 on all other programs.

Vobsub didn´t work for me either. I even copied the vsfilter.dll to system32 sudir as requested. No good at all.
FYI: IPodME works flawlessly if I don´t use subtitles. Maybe there´s a bug between IPodMe/AVISynth interface (just a guess). My procedure nowadays to make an iTouch video with subtitles is burning the subtitle to the AVI using VirtualDubMod+TextSub filter (time consuming…) and then converting the subtitled AVI to MP4 using iPodME.
Any suggestions?

Great prog, like how lightweight it is. I’ve converted 54 movies for my ipod touch 16 gb (couldn\t fit emall in one try though :P) Awesome werk! I leave my pc on for days just converting and converting!

The mp4 file will not synch to my ipod. It will go into Itunes and play through itunes with no problem, but when I try to synch to ipod it says it does not recognise the format, so it will not put it on the ipod.

The app rocks. Congrats on a great implementation of a very useful idea. I’ve been having trouble with audio sync, but i haven´t seen anyone else comment this. Am I doing something wrong? My PC is a 2.8Ghz with 1Gb RAM…

Hey, I’m having mixed results at the moment.
When I convert videos at 640×480 using the profile Slow Quality, I get the same problem as Rebecca, it is recognised in iTunes but won’t sync with my iPod despite being an mp4 file.

Really good program!
Only one problem, like Genesis. But it happens only when I add to the “list to convert” a file located on my external HD. If I put this file on my Internal HD, there is no problem anymore!
Do you know from were it could be coming from?

i’m using version 1.2 and the 640×480 files work fine with the ipod touch. however, itunes says that my ipod video (80 gig) can’t play these files. i’m using the latest firmware for the ipod video as well.

Great little app. Besides the fact that it has the most useful features it’s especially nice that it is portable and that it keeps it’s own codecs. 🙂 A lot of other video converting apps install some terrible codec pack which messes up your carefully selected codecs. 😦

Seems to be having a problem converting an mkv clip (x264 video, AC3 audio) I have. It just stops and a small file is created (incomplete). No log is presented either. I didn’t find any in the temp folder either.
Doesn’t it support mkv? If not, are you planning to add it or will installing AviSynth and using my directshow splitter/codecs work?

Nevermind. I just forgot to uncheck the “Use .srt subtitles” checkbox. Maybe you should have it unchecked standard, or have it save the last used settings to an ini-file in the same folder as the app. That would still keep it portable and clean.

This app is the reason I still own an iPod. It has been working perfectly for me since the first day I tried it.
Now, I want to change the directory converted videos are placed in. I imagine this could be done by editing the source code. I have never coded in C/C++ or whatever this is in. Could someone direct me as to what I must do to modify the source code?

I’ve been using this app ever since I got my touch back around december. works perfectly. Image quality is great, even at highest settings it encodes over 100fps on my core2duo. I’ve converted hundreds of videos with no issues whatsoever.

I’ll check the svcd format for the next release, but I can’t promise anything as the conversion is handled by ffmpeg… Did you try checking ‘use directshow codecs’ in advanced options?

Fantastic app, searched high and low for something this simple. However, the one issue for me is that is always saves the encoded file in the same directory as the original file, not the ipodme directory. I am hoping in the future you can set a default “encode to” directory for all files?

First, I would like to thank Noda for the application.
Second, for the people with the subtittle issue, I think I founded the problem. I think Genesis (message 38) had same problem, his path is in portuguese (…C:\Documents and Settings\Administrador\ConfiguraÇÕes locais…) and are accented caracters. Mine too.
I modified the default TEMP and TMP for my user (System, Advanced, Environment Variables) to a X:\temp, and.. works fine!
I hope this can help others with same problem, and Noda, to fix it.

more info. It seems that ipodme saves the encoded files to the same directory as the first video in the batch list. Not the same folder as ipodme, but all on the same folder.
The only thing it could be is that more source videos are on the network?

solved my problem. Ipodme creates the converted files in the same folder as the source if you run it from a network drive. If you run it from a local drive it works as expected.

I’m also having the lip sync / audio sync problem.
It only seems to occur when I use the “use srt subtitles” feature. So I guess it has got something to do with Avisynth.
I’ve used “Fast, size” two times. One with and the other without the subtitles.
Without srt = all synced up.
With srt = lip sync problem.
Is this something that can be fixed? Or is it a limitation / bug in Avisynth?
By the way, ipodme is currently my favourite encoder to use with my ipod touch. It’s small, easy to use, free and it just works! 😉 I’ll be willing to donate if the .srt feature could be fixed.

The reason i ask about profiles with kbps listed is that if i have an avi encoded at 750kbps then i only need to reencode at 700kbps or lower there is no point in throwing more kbps at it than what is needed
At the moment with your profiles noone knows what the kbps quality is so we are blindly reencoding

2 pass is useless using h264 encoder:
– 2 pass is only useful to achieve a fixed bitrate, and maximze quality for that bitrate
-> h264 on best option achieve image-quality based bitrate, it means that it won’t go further than your video’s original bitrate (as low bitrate will reduce quality), and optimize the video to provide a constant quality over constant bitrate, which is a better solution.
And the reason there’s no bitrate in my profile is because they’re all quality-based and not birate based: if your inpu video has bad quality the used bitrate will be lower than if your video has a high qualiy.

Unfortunately a problem has arisen. I updated to the latest build of the CCCP codecs and now when I select an output with subs I get the following message in the output window > “Resampling with input channels greater than 2 unsupported.
Can not resample 3 channels @ 48000 Hz to 2 channels @ 44100 Hz
Ready.”, and it only makes a 1kb file 😦 I updated to the latest version of AviSynth, there’s an alpha from September 2008, but that didn’t help. Any ideas how to fix this? If I turn off the subs it works ok…
Oh, and by the way I noticed if I set the priority to high it still only utilizes one of my CPUs and in the task manager I see it’s taking 50% CPU time, will you make the app take advantage of dual core processors?

Badghost solved the issue for the people that have Windows XP in portuguese.
Changing the variables as explained on his post (87) solved my issue with subtitles as well.

Is .NET 2.0 still a minimum? I’ve tried adding a basic WMV file (the default getting started file in Mydocs>My Videos) and it clears the convert list immediately and no processor usage. I only have .net 2.0 and compact framework 2.0 installed, just wondered whether minimum specs have been revised.

Hi Noda, great piece of software.
I can confirm that your software runs on all available cores.
What doesn’t run on all available cores though is FFmpeg.exe.
On my Quad core Q6600 it can do a 1 hour vid in 15 minutes and that’s with ffmpeg maxiing out the 1 core out of 4 available.
On the console output you have the -threads set to auto but I read someware that setting it to zero will use all available.
This in itself may not be the best idea as if it’s uncontrollably using all cores the users PC will grind to a halt so maybe in your next build you could have it as an option?
Potentially it could cut the converting time by another 75%

I have already tryed to put the vsfilter.dll in the windowns system32 file. However, there has been some problems in opening the program when I try to run it from my D-Link DNS323 NAS.
Could it be because the network drive, which is connected to my computer via the router by an Ethernet cable, is not recognized as a “real” hard drive? It appears as Y: drive on my computer.

I hacked a version of IpodME that uses the latest FFMPEG and the proper -thread parameter. I can confirm that there is NO speed increase on a Core Duo whatsover between this version and the one Noda has up on his site. The only advantage is that some more exotic input formats can be read (Real Video 4) without DirectShow.
Noda, if you want my slightly modified source (new parameters and size parsing to attribute for changes in FFMPEG), you got my Email.

i just used the v2.0 and the soft subs don’t work…i check the .mp4 with dumpster and the sub track is there (sbtl) but i thing you mess the atoms…another bug is that it forces 30fps even the input is 24fps (23.976)….best regards…

The soft subtitles only works with the iPod. To see them on your pc, use quicktime and rename the file to m4v, however the subtitle size will be messed up. It’s made to work on ipod, not PC.

Hello Noda, it seems that 2.0 (or whatever version of ffpmeg you included) uses more system resources than the previous versions. My system heats up fairly quickly if the encoder utilizes both cores, so I’ve always just restricted it to a single core without any heating issues.
With 2.0 even single core usage generates enough heat that it negatively affects my computer. What exactly did you include in this version? A list of what the updates entail should be published, I think.
Looks like I’ll keep using 1.2. Thanks again for such a great app!

@darlynp: Yeah, that’s the expected behavior, ffmpeg has been optimized to take advantage of multicore processor. What’s the point of having 2 cores if the programs can’t use it then?
I don’t get the point of having a dual core processor if you don’t want to use that power because it heats up your system :-s
Also, all the modifications I’ve done since version 1.2 are listed in the changelog which is on this page, if you’re interested.

Excellent. If you’re curious about my rig, it’s poorly designed, prebuilt line of computers from one of the major vendors of today. They advertise dual-core performance yet the product can’t handle it. Never buying an assembled unit again.

I can however suggest you using some tool to control the frequency of you CPU, like rmclock (never tested it on a desktop though) as now the desktop CPU have frequency control like laptop CPU, this could help you manage your heat problem.

I tested various sources video at 24.98 fps, and I could not reproduce the problem. Even testing my fps detection function with the data of your log did not showed any problem. Seems like a really great piece of software. However, I am unable to get the soft subtitles to work on my iPod Touch. Anything I need to change on the device.

I have the same problem it forces the each video into 30fps when they’re usually 23.976 fps. With videora there was an option I could hit that allowed me to fix that.

Simply the best convertor for iPod video. Still, even with new version 2 as it’s become better. It does make me wonder why those other, commercial convertors are so bad – good work, thanks for this little programme!
But, I’ll repeat my one wish: that it would convert files in original video size (e.g. widescreen) so I can watch it from iTunes as well when it’s a video that came with a CD single – iTunes does convert MOV videos in various sizes. Maybe an idea for V3?

Hi Noda, I’ve an issue. If I try converting any video with any settings of higher quality than “turbo, quality”, I get nothing but audio only in e converted video. Videos converted with “Turbo, Quality” & “Turbo, size” works fine.

Nice job! This new version is great but sometimes I have some problem with soft subtitles : with a few movies, I can’t enable subtitles on my Iphone. It doesn’t work!
I think there are a bug with my srt file. It’s strange because it works well on my PC. Anyone can help me? Noda?

@wildberry> iPod can’t read video with resolution greater than 640×480, so since it’s an iPod converter I won’t provide any bigger resolution or people will complain it’s not working on their ipods 😉 But if you really want to use iPodME for this, choose a custom profile and as an additional parameter enter “-s x”, you can then specify the size you want (but video may not be playable on ipod then).
@ralliart12> Can you post here the output log (click the “v” button) when you try a “fast” or “slow” profile? Thanks.
@Boutils> Same thing, can you post the output log please? You can check there (at the end) what may have caused the problem with subtitles.

I see nothing wrong there… Did you tried the video on your iPod? Because if you don’t have any h.264 codecs on your PC, it is normal that you’re unable to see the video.

Yes, the error is obviously in your .srt. As it shouts an UTF data error, you should try to open your file with Notepad++ and check if there is an incorrect character (normal text viewers won’t show invalid UTF characters).
You can also try to convert your file to standard ascii using Notepad++.

Hey, just tried your software.
I tested it on an encode of an anime episode with subtitles embeded in the input mkv.
However, there are no subtitles on the output, and the encoder only used one core during the whole operation.
This is on XP pro SP3, with a q6600 quad.

@Austin> Please read the help file. Embedded subtitles are NOT supported, only external .srt file are supported for subtitles.
@Thilo> Hmm… This converter use “pixel aspect ratio” of the input video, which means is your video has a size of 640×480 for example, AR will be 640:480 = 4:3. If the size of your video is different than the internal AR (bad practice) it may be distorted. I’ll see if I can check for the internal AR for the next version.
@Boutils> I’ll see what I can do, but that’s not normal as it means your subtitles have bad character encoding.

This software works really well. Thank you! Just a side note. When I have 2 external .srt files, say en and fr, none of them are displayed on my iPod Touch. If I use only one (either en or fr), subtitles are displayed right.

Great Program.
I really like batch encoding feature with subtitle support.
But when I play in ipod-touch and select the subtitle, it shows ‘unkown title’. (Need to add ttext:lang=ko in MP4Box)

@dryadz> as explained in the help file, to set the language code of your subtitles, your need to postfix it to the file name, ie mysub.en.srt.
I’ll see what can be done for UTF8 checking, it should not be too difficult to implement it.
What do you means by “SMI subtitles” by the way?
For the m4v/mp4 thing, it’s basically the same container, only the filename changes. One problem is that with m4v files, subtitles are played with a bad position in quicktime, and mp4 files are more universal.

I have Xvid AVI source files.
The convertor distorts aspect ratios, in Slow and Fast profiles. However, the Turbo profiles works fine.
Studying the console window, I found that Turbo profiles add “-aspect 480:272” (or whatever the real resolution is) option to the command line.
Slow and Fast profiles don’t add this option, and show this suspicious extra line in the console output: [libx264 @ 01847460]using SAR=17/24.

Another problem that I have found: it does not convert all audio streams of the source file, just one. If I have a movie with English and French audio, only the first audio track will get converted and the other one will get lost.

@Pete> It’s your video that has a wrong aspect ratio then (17/24). Try playing it on quicktime (or any video player that respect aspect ratio) for example, it will be distorted the same way.
The “-aspect 480:272″ parameter is added when using turbo mode because of a bug in the current version of ffmpeg than prevents libxvid to receive the aspect ratio settings from the decoder.
Concerning the multiple audio streams, that’s the correct behavior as only one audio stream is supported for ipod videos, the first one of the source being used.

Noda, thanks for your answer. However, my copy of QuickTime cannot play XviD AVI files. It shows only black screen – but these black screens are always in the right aspect ratio and resolution, no distortion.
Also, the source files play fine in GOM player and Windows Media Player, as well as on five hardware DivX players that I have access to (two different Philips DVD players, Toshiba and Umax photo frames and Palm PDA).

I didn’t know that iPods support multiple audio channels, thanks. However I’m not sure ffmpeg support multiple audio tracks for output, I’ll check that.
Concerning the aspect ratio, many players don’t care of the aspect ratio set defined inside the video track, currently only ffmpeg with an option activated or quicktime / apple hardware players for those I’m aware of. That’s not a pretty standard behavior, but most players assume the pixel aspect ratio (aka the resolution) of the video is the same as the aspect ratio of the video, which is most of the time true, but sometimes wrong.
A video is allowed for example to have a size of 320×240 (4:3 pixel aspect ratio) but a 16:9 aspect ratio, and most players will plays it distorted (not ipods, though). Your problem is exactly the opposite, the internal (17:24) aspect ratio is wrong but as most players ignore it, it’s fine.
I’ll maybe add a “Fix aspect ratio” option in the next version. for those rare cases, or simply use like most players the pixel aspect ratio.

From my testing using a 756×576 16:9 MPG from digital TV broadcast (pixel aspect is stored correctly in the MPG file):
– x264 modes retain correct PAR
– XviD modes encode as 1:1 ration (image is horizontally compressed)
Also, when the encoding input folder is the same as the output folder, and the input file is already MP4, you should check the filename to make sure the source file will not be overwritten (resulting in a video that is only 1 frame long).
I’d like to finish with a feature request that many people may find useful:
– user selection of input aspect ratio
– user selection of output aspect ratio
– user choice of “stretch to aspect” or “crop to aspect”

I’ve already started some work to parse the AR correctly, and already fixed the UTF8 problem for subtitles.
Currently, Xvid encoder has a bug that prevents the original AR of videos to be used, that’s why I force it to 1:1 which works most of the time. x264 retains the original aspect.
I will probably add some advanced and custom options to specify explicitely the aspect ratio of videos.
In the meantime, using a custom profile with the additional parameter “-ar ” can be used.

Noda 218: Thanks for your explanation. I understand what you mean, however, I cannot make any other software show anything wrong with the files. I downloaded GSpot 2.70a which analyzes video files and shows (among other stats) their SAR, PAR and DAR. All of them are OK for all the files, yet iPodME uses all kinds of strange SARs when converting. Some examples:
File 1 – 480×272 resolution
GSpot says: SAR 1.765 (30:17) PAR 1.000 (1:1) DAR 1.765 (30:17)
iPodME says: using SAR=17/36
File 2 – 480×272 resolution

Actually, Gspot only calculates SAR/DAR using the resolution, not reading the internal video properties (480/272 = 1.765).
iPodME is based on FFmpeg, which parses AR from 2 things:
– the AR defined in the container (avi, mp4, mkv etc)
– the AR defined in the video stream
Both should be identical. If they are different, FFmpeg use the AR from the video stream (which is the right choice) and overrides the AR of the container.
For what I’m aware of, Quicktime should display you the correct AR in the video properties.

iPodME 2.2 is choking when trying to convert MP4s which were produced by Nero Recode 4 (part of the Nero 9 suite). Maybe ffmpeg toolset can’t properly decode an MP4 that was created by Nero? Maybe an MP4 produced by Nero is not fully compliant with standards?

first of all, many thanks for sharing this tool – very useful 🙂
only 2 observations:
1 – in version 2.2, the subtitles are messed by that “utf-8 conversion”. things like é, á, ã, é, í, etc turn into “squares” when i watch the movie on ipod or kmplayer on pc (i am in brazil by the way)
2 – when the filename is something like that:
video.abc.dvd.avi
and the srt is something like that:
video.abc.dvd.srt
i believe the subtitles doesn´t “inject” in the avi
just removing the “.” and replacing by “spaces” resolves this little problem 😉 nothing serious – but maybe in the future this step is not needed anymore 😉

The UTF8 “conversion” I’m doing is just taking care of badly encoded UTF8 stream, so may it means that your subtitles are in bad UTF8 format (basically is means that your subtitle are not encoded in ascii or UTF8, but in custom ISO-XXXX encoding).
I’ll see what I can do for this.

Thanks for adding the aspect ratio options noda.
Getting some unusual results with output resolution.
– I start with a 16:9 720×576 MPG (ok)
– I select 480×320 and 16:9 options (ok)
– I manually set cropleft * cropright to 96 (ok)
– iPodMe sets ffmpeg to 400×320 output (ok)
– ffmpeg detects source aspect is anamorphic (?)
– final output is 208×320 with 4:3 aspect (incorrect?)
The final aspect is correct, but a lot of quality is lost due to the much lower resolution.
I think when manually setting the output aspect, the input’s pixel aspect should be ignored to properly use the selected encode resolution.

I still have a little proplem with sub-titles : Impossible to read them in the mp4 file (I run the 2.2 version).
I have the film.avi and the film.srt in the same file.
The soft well indicates the processing of the srt but at the end, when I watch the mp4 in VLC, no sub apears !
Any idea ?

i put in the movie folder two subtitles (one greek one english)!

@Deion> mkv works, although there’s no way to choose the audio track that will be used (subs must be external) except by using the -map option in the additional parameters of the custom profiles (see ffmpeg manual).

Thanks for the software. I’ve downloaded it but I’m sorry to say that I don’t know how to install it. I’ve clicked on files after downloading but it asks me to select the application to open it.
I don’t know what to select.
I have checked that I have Net framework. I have XP,it had net framework 1.1 plus the service pack 2 so I don’t think that is the problem. Thanks for helping out. I’m obviously not a techie.

You also need to update your .Net frameword to at least version 2.0 or else it won’t work (google or go on microsoft website for that).

Nice app!
Two observations:
1. It would be nice to write the log somewhere, after the app has finished encoding. Maybe in the same directory as the .cfg file.
2. Sometimes the source file is a 4:3 image, but embedded in a 16:9 frame (letterboxing) by a clueless person. In this case, the ideal is to cut off the left/right black bars (the letterbox) and create a clean 4:3 output.
Currently, iPodME resizes the image and, if the output format is 640×480, will preserve the ugly letterbox and make the image smaller – 640×3**
So, therefore, the app should provide a way to specify how the output ratio is achieved – by zooming or by cutting. When encoding 16:9 -> 4:3, cutting is more appropriate.
I tried “fix aspect ratio”, and it does create a 640×480 output, but it preserves the letterbox and the image is distorted.

Hey Noda, thanks for the amazing app.
I have a feature suggestion here. I noticed on some videos that scenes that should be pitch black were not rendered as pure black in the ipod screen (the letterbox black bars look “blacker” than the video’s black screen). Of course this is a matter of black point/levels adjustment and my suggestion is an “automatic levels adjustment” that makes a somewhat reliable scan of the movie, detects the darkest “black” used and corrects the video, pushing it to pure black (same can be done with white point, of course).
With a feature like that we would at least be using the full screen tone range, instead of a cropped range limited by some movie’s bad black/white point adjustment. Considering that the ipod screen’s black level is not big deal in the first place, exploring the full range would be nice.

Great app you have here, does a heck of a lot for something so small.
Had a problem that I believe may be related to the version of FFMPEG contained in iPodME 2.2. Basically, FFMPEG is unable to convert mulit-cahnnel audio over to stereo (in this case it’s 6ch to 2ch). Not sure if there’s anything that you can do about this aside from new FFMPEG libs but wanted to mention it (log will be at the end of comment).
A couple suggestions for new features that would make iPodME better than 99% of other converters out there are support for embedded subtitles and audio track selection (not sure if FFMPEG supports these).
In my case, these are the only features missing for me to be able to use this app as my only iPhone converter. You already have the essentials very well taken care of.

I seem to have a problem with the softcoded subtitles. When I use 1.2 (the hard-code way) it works fine, but when I convert the same in 2.2 it doesn’t work. Do I need to mark a dot like in 1.2 or does it do the subtitles automaticly?

one question: is it possible to have all the chapters/titles united into one big file? it’s converting each vts_xx_x.vob file individually, but would be nice to be able to just have into one on the ipod.
is this already available and i can’t find the setting?

For those of you looking for a solution for subtitles being converted with garbage (case of brazilian subs). You should first save the .srt in UTF-8 (through notepad) and then use iPodME.
Noda, keep up the good job. Great app. Just an observation, maybe the UTF-8 conversion isn’t working properly? Just a thought. Best regards!

Program does a great job creating quality video with small file size. The program does a poor job of converting wmv files however. Many wmv files, that convert fine with other freeware programs, either will not convert at all, or turn out with video corruption. Also some files, especially real media files, convert to an unwatchable 12 frames per second when choosing the slow, size option. Hopefully future versions of ipodme will work better.

Awesome program, its really helpful, and saves you a lot of time. Is it possible to be able to increase the resolution cause i know that the ipod can play a higher resolution, higher than 640×480, i know cause i’ve seen some videos from the itunes store (850×480), and with videora i can convert videos up to 720×406 and be able to watch it in the ipod. Can you upgrade the “Max size”??

Nice tool, thanks. However, only one subtitle track works. If I have two or more subtitle tracks, there will be no subtitles shown on iPhone. Tested many times on different sources. Have anyone succeeded to add more than one subtitle track?

Im trying to change the dimentions of a video from 720×368 to 320×240 but it will only convert it to 640×327 and for some reason that size isnt working for my ipod and i think the 320×240 will but i cant get it to change.

I added chapters to my encoded file (with one subtitle) but when I save and play the video on my ipod touch, I only have the chapters and no subtitle anymore.
Does someone has an idea?

Great program, the only one that worked satisfactorily for me so far. Tried FormatFactory and Xmedia Recode, but my iPod Classic wouldn’t sync the converted files and the files were quite big most of the time. This one works great. All my AVI files converted just fine and were surprisingly small for their quality ((I use “slow, size”). Don’t know why, as the other programs are supposed to use ffmpeg, too. Whatever. I just gave a small donation because this program made my day!

Great software, very usefull.
I had problems with some “packed” avi files but they just need to be unpacked with MPEGModifier. So maybe it would be usefull to had a unpack option in a future release. What do u think about that ?

Yes, a 64b version of ffmpeg would be needed to exploit the 64b features, but for now it would be pointless and could even result in a performance loss. 64b usage does not provide magical performance boost, it allows addressing more memory but needs more bandwidth and requires more memory to run.

The mp4 file will not synch to my ipod. It will go into Itunes and play through itunes with no problem, but when I try to synch to ipod it says it does not recognise the format, so it will not put it on the ipod.

I had the same problem a while ago and I was able to fix it by following some steps i found on itunes…
You have the files in itunes, but not you have to convert to an “ipod” format and it will make a much smaller file.
in itunes, highlight your movie, click on Advanced (menu on top), then select, “Create Ipod or Iphone version”.

can i give a suggestion? it would be really nice if you put an option in the program like “burn subtitle to video”, as was removed in version 2.0, so that people like me that don’t have an ipod compatible with soft subtitles can see videos with subtitles. your program is perfect, great job!

I got my soft subtitles working after I changed the extension from mp4 to m4v. Then in Quicktime -> view/subittles/unknown…but they’re huge and basically all over the screen.

This is an overall excelent peace of software. Unfortunately I think there are still some glitches with the subtitles. After encoding a movie from AVI to MP4, I realize quikctime only recognizes the subtitles after renaming the file extension from .mp4 to .mva.
On the Iphone, however, I can’t make them show no matter what I do. Note tha I have subtitles enabled on the Iphone’s Ipod…
Can You please help me on this?

Before I start off I just want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH NODA iPodME is AWESOME!
Now we’ve got that out off the way, I’d like to inform you off a problem I’ve been getting when trying to add .srt subtitles to a movie. Because all you need to do is add a .srt file with exactly the same name as the movie, right? Like for instance, when I went to convert the movie 300 I just added the 300.avi and the 300.srt with my Dutch subtitles, and that’s the right way to do it right? Or maybe I’m wrong, do I need enable settings on my iPod (Touch 3G 32GB), or on the converter itself?
If anybody would even be kindly enough to consider helping me out, I’d be EXTREMELY (yes, in caps lock) happy. I’ll be checking back this page on a regular basis, so your efforts won’t go to waste.
Oh and Noda, if you need ANY information about what settings and what not I have used, you’re more then welcome to send me an email, and I will reply to it as soon as possible.

was the solution.
Like, ” the 300.avi ” and “the 300.en.srt”
I can read subtitles on my iPod classic this way.
But still, i can’t make subtiltles show on my nano…hahaha

Thanks for replying man! So in my case (having Dutch subtitles) it has to be something like 300.du.srt? Does it actually matter what the language code is, or could even I do 300.eng.srt while the subtitles aren’t English?

AWESOME! I DID IT! 😀
So after discovering that the language code for my country (Holland) is nl (you can find ALL the language codes on this page: http://www.w3.org/WAI/ER/IG/ert/iso639.htm) I added my “300.avi” and “300.nl.avi” and converted them. After that I got 2 files: 300.mp4 and 300.nl.mp4, so my first reaction was that the converter didn’t incorporate the subs into the mp4 but just made a separate file for it, but I decided to put it on my iPod and just see what would happen, and after discovering there was a speech bubble icon next to the rewind button (on the iPod while playing the video of course) I could select my subtitles and they showed up perfectly without any problems!
Now that’s out off the way, I would like to know what the best settings are for viewing a movie full screen (so without any black bars on the top or bottom) without the least amount of deformation (like faces being kinda long and stuff). Can it get any better then this; http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/3817/sadasdsadsad.jpg ? That’s how a converted video looks like using my current settings (480×320; slow, quality and ‘Stretch video to fit size). I’d love to hear some feedback on what settings other people are using and how that looks! 🙂

Nice little app you got here… looks like you followed the K.I.S.S. method while coding it 😉
I’m using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (RTM) and program file is copied to « C:\Program Files (x86)\iPodME ». For some reason, when I try to close the program, an unhandled exception appears, stating that access to « C:\Program Files (x86)\iPodME\iPodME.cfg » is denied.
The error does not appear if I run the program with administrative privileges. However, I think it should close properly without them.
This is no big deal, just a comment. Otherwise, great program ! 😉

Great software.
I had some problems with the subtitles. When I encoded a movie that was already an mp4 to include subtitles, it didn’t work and the program gave me 2 files, on of witch was the movie, but without subtitles. When i renamed the mp4 to an m4v file first it did work.
I hope this helps people who have similar problems.

So many GUI arround ffmpeg, no one seems so simple & efficient than this one.
I was using mediacoder (quite buggy) and videoro (plenty of horrible ads) but this one seems pretty more straightforward though complete enough. All just i need is to convert avi to Android. BTW you chould call it androidme as well 😉
Just one thing: i was used to H264 2pass 300kb/s max size 480×320 with those 2 softwares (pretty hard compression but still ok for me). i am using “slow, size” profile but this is 70% size more that the settings i was using. any advise to have a “slow, tiny size” like profile? my guess is “custom” profile, then x264, best quality, constant quality, but with which quantizer value???

Hi, you have an error because the input video has more than 2 channels. It probably 5.1 DTS, you need a mixdown before, as ffmpeg can’t manage more than 2 channels.

If you know the specifications of your device, is easy to make
compatible videos for that device with IpodME. You just have to
put a few parameters into “Additional Parameters” field. Sorry, i don’t know what parameters your device may need.

i have a intel p4 2gb w/ 1.46 gb ram. i converted a movie 712mb avi to a mp4 320×240 with the profile “fast, size” it took me an hour to covert to a size of 165 mb…….. no complaints here!!!

Can you update to the newest ffmpeg? I set the audio encoder to “aac” instead of “libfaac” and it works fine, but I do not know the new parameters as well.

Awesome program. I used it to convert my videos for use on my Ipod Classic (and the fixed-ratio high-quality is spectacular!!).
Unfortunately, I now need help.
My old Vista 32-bit Home Premium laptop broke down and I switched to a Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium laptop. Even with a fresh install of Win7, every time I try to convert with IpodME, I get the error “FFmpeg video converter has stopped working”.
I just tried on another computer with Vista 64-bit on it, and IpodME worked fine, so I know it’s not because of being 64-bit.
I tried other free converters (which suck compared to yours) and they run into the same problem of getting an error with the ffmpeg.exe when used to convert to anything Ipod-compatible.
Any idea what might be causing these errors? Any help would be appreciated.

love the program, works great on my w7 laptop, but it won’t run on my new computer with xp i installed the latest .net 4 but it says that it is “unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application”, microsoft says that the old versions are included in the new one, so I don’t understand the issue

Hi, i would like to know “how” encoding a video with subtitles. I have a movie (16:9, 700Mo) with a .srt file, but when i drag and drop the two files in the batch ipodme encodes it well, then says “adding subtitles” but when i read it…no sub. is there a proper order or smth to include the sub in the file?
except this pb (kinda pissing me off) this program is just AMZING! thank you, it’s really the best one i found!

the subtitles are soft subtitles that are embedded in the video file (much like a subtitle in a .mkv file)
after the encoding finishes, change the extension to .m4v and open the file in quicktime. one of the sub-options in quicktime are subtitles. enable it and you will see the subtitles in quicktime.
iOS has a support for soft subtitles from version 2.x. so if you have an iOS that is compatible with soft subtitles, just drag the .m4v file to itunes, synchronize, and you will have the ability to enable and disable the subtitles on your iPhone or iPod.

I really like this program. It has been very helpful with my video files, but I’ve noticed that with .vob files, the video shows fine on the computer, but when played on the ipod, there seems to be almost a staticky like lines that randomly appear (almost as if one horizontal line of pixels where shifted or removed), but besides that, I LOVE it.

There is a bug in the application. The “Max Size:” combobox allows input, but you have code in computeSize() which gets the size via this code:
string newsize = size_text[sizeSelect.SelectedIndex];
The control should either be changed to DropDownStyle = DropDownList and fix the default selection. Really all the default selections should be moved to loadSettings().
The alternative, and the one I am in favor of, is to change it to allow arbitrary resultion/size.
I also noticed some improvements that could be made to reduce duplicated strings using things like string.Format(), and it looks like you are using “\n\r” rather than “\r\n”, for which there is a System.Environment.NewLine constant. You should also move all strings (messages, labels, etc) to a separate XML file for easy translation.

Nice program. Picture quality is fantastic on my Touch 4. Couple of suggestions for the next release: an option to downmix the audio into stereo OR Dolby Pro Logic. Why the FPS rate falls during the conversion and delays the ending?
My movie got a 5 hours delay because the fps starts going down as the file is converted.

It’s normal, the FPS goes may vary because the complexity of the scene to encode change during a movie. I bet that your movie starts with black/static screen, fast to encode but as soon as the real movie starts the fps will drop.

iAudioME – for iAudio too!
For those interested – this may be the only ‘portable’ video converter that will produce videos playable on the iAudio – at least my iAudio “9”. I had to fiddle a bit, but i finally got it to work with these settings:

Lastly, rename the file as *.avi and viola!
The additional parameters are, i think, the most critical. The iAudio 9 doesn’t play AAC and if you don’t use ‘-f avi’ it doesn’t recognise the metadata, and will not play either.
File sizes went were reduced around ten-fold (~1gb to ~100mb)
Maybe other settings will work too. Knock yourself out and share your results.

About the subtitles, I encoded the same movie with iPodMe and Handbrake.
Only the version encoded with Handbrake has subtitles that can be displayed. Same behaviour on iPod 4, iPad 2 and iPhone 4s.
Maybe this helps in solving the subtitles problem in iPodMe, it’s far more practical than Handbrake.

So I’ve tried to solve the problem with subtitles under iOS5. As i couldn’t see any problem in the 2.4 source code I made other tests :
1/ converted a mkv without subtitles
2/ remuxed the mp4 file with a added srt using mp4box
In iTunes the remuxed mp4 shows the sub but once in a iDevice (I’ve tried only with an iPad2) the sub disappears.

Hi Nova,
first, congratulations on this very usefull piece of software.
It was working perfectly well until I had to change my PC.
Now, iTunes says that he can’t copy the file “because it cannot be played on this iphone”. Needless to say, everything was working just fine before I change my PC.
I tried installing different version of .Net (with some problems with the latest version…) and it ended up working fine (I instlalled AviSync just in case also).
I tried several version of you soft (the recent, the old) and the problem remains. Any ideas what I should try ?

extreem: you do nothing wrong, having video.avi and video[.en].srt in the same folder WILL ADD the subtitles; one way to check is to open the newly created mp4 file on your PC with, for example, VLC video player and display the subtitles
but they MUST be txt files (srt files)
however, on iOS 5, the subtitles aren’t visible anymore and many of us have posted here requests for a fix…alas, no resolution so far

This is excellent software; idiot proof enough for me to use a lot. Works nice on a Gen 3 touch.
To increase volume in the re-encode, use additional parameter -vol -, as in -vol -1024
I use 512 1024 or 2048 as the number, depending on how loud the original is. I used to use the same parameters in the Sansa Video4fuze program which used ffmpeg and mencoder

I really love this app. I have been using it for several years now. Higher resolution encoding for the new ipad would be very useful when you can get around to it. (realistically 720p upto 1080p, not it’s massive native resolution) Keep up the good work 🙂

Hello everyone I am researching for a week on creating a dual MP4 audio and subtitles compatitble iPod / iPhone, the problem was tube q q when the movie bone ensable video plus 2 audio playback when audio is the 2 listen at the same time and in my iphone and not in iTunes I get the option to change audio available on the movie, now hise recoded this for q when the movie takes too long, now nose that will have the XMedia Recode when recoded some movie with that program q agree to support the iPhone (already tested and their characteristics) the resulting movie if I can normally see both the iPhone and iTunes, I mean you do not hear the 2 audios at once.
Now another problem with the subtitles, according to my research (for reference I put this page http://blog.theliel.es/2008/05/subtlitulos-jaque-mate-html.html) the MP4 supports subtitles but apple has a denomiación especially internally to identify the subtitles of a page q peliculas.Segun I served as a reference saying that internally in the hexadecimal code of the movie had to change a string that is “text” with “SBTL” and change the extension of the film by m4v, with this and apple devices would recognize the subtitle in the movie as I saw tal.En page that made him almost everything with the Quick Time PRO follow the steps and upon all parties to join MP4 (Video and Audio ) and MOV (Subtitles) Movie MOV kept them as separate, supposedly this on the aforementioned page would have told me a nice q MOV with audio tracks and subtitles, but unfortunately nose if q is the Autio hise a test with a video not a short film over 5GB like me, I generated no MOV.
All this little research wanted to share it with you and see if any of the forum could generate a large ENTIRE movie from 5 to 15 GB on dual audio MP4 and subtitles that can recognize the iPod / iPhone and iTunes.

hello to all ! i am amazed to see that there are some posts here ! congratulations to the developer, this tool still has fans today 🙂 i would like to put small videos on my old iPod video 5.5G (“enhanced” or “late 2006” version), that has 320 x 240 display, but if possible in 640 x 480 format so that i can to put also on devices with a bit better resolution (like old iPhone or low end android tablet). but on this iPod device, resolution 640 x 480 is possible only with “baseline 3.0” profile, so what are the settings for this profile ? thx

oh and to avoid conversion, is there any youtube format that could be directly with these characteristics ? (youtube format 18 is not accepted by my iPod). thanks !

well, iPod video 5.5 requires “Baseline Low-Complexity” for 640 x 480 with H264
only iPod classic and further support Baseline 3.0
the question still applies 🙂

seems that “Baseline Low-Complexity” for 640 x 480 with H264 requires encoding by apple software that is discontinued, or by ffmpeg along with a small “uuid atom” file, this can be found on internet but a bit too complicated for my knowledge..
